A beautiful wordless picture book about escape, hope and compassion. Issa Watanabe’s moving picture book is completely wordless and suitable for conversation about the world’s refugees and can help teach children about refugees and migration with humanity, care, dignity and empathy. Through strong images PÅ FLUGT tell about the journey of a group of animals when they have to leave the forest. Colorful and simple images show us the courage, loss and hope that flight and migration require. And that arriving in a new country can mean burying a part of the past. Children will easily be able to relate to the beautiful animal figures, which Issa Watanabe has given each a recognizable identity. The dark background on the pages of the book helps to underline the seriousness of their journey, and the fact that it is animals that escape helps to make the story universal.

“It’s a rare feat: a wordless picture book where the absence of text enhances the stories it tells. With its strict lack of color, which is only seen where necessary, and its evocative imagery, the artist’s images make the migrant’s journey – distinctive yet everyday – palpable. A raw, surprising portrait of migration.”
– Kirkus Starred Review

“It tells the story that concerns us all about people on the run. … This book provides a really good opportunity to talk about it with children and to immerse themselves in these excellent images.”
– Julia Westlake, Norddeutscher Rundfunkt. Book Journal

“It is very similar to the refugee problem that we are facing at the moment. …”
– Ursula Nowak, Deutschlandfunk
